Alberta Grade 8 Math — What Students Learn

Grade 8 math in Alberta covers a wide range of topics that prepare students for high school mathematics. From working with perfect squares and square roots to solving linear equations and applying the Pythagorean theorem, Grade 8 is a critical year for building strong math foundations.

Number Sense: Squares, Roots, Percents, and Integers

Students begin Grade 8 by deepening their number sense. They explore perfect squares and square roots, work with percents, ratios, rates, and positive fractions, and learn to multiply and divide integers. These skills connect directly to algebra and geometry topics later in the year.

Linear Relations and Equations

A major focus of Grade 8 math is linear thinking. Students graph and analyze two-variable linear relations, then move on to modeling and solving linear equations in various forms. These skills are the foundation of the algebra students will use throughout high school.

Geometry: Pythagorean Theorem, Surface Area, and Volume

Grade 8 geometry introduces the Pythagorean theorem as a tool for solving real-world problems. Students also calculate the surface area and volume of 3D objects and draw nets for 3D shapes. They learn to interpret top, front, and side views of objects made from right rectangular prisms.

Congruence, Data, and Probability

Later in the year, students study congruent polygons and learn to critique how data is presented in circle graphs, line graphs, bar graphs, and pictographs. The course wraps up with probability, where students solve problems involving independent events.
