Alberta Grade 2 Math Curriculum Overview
Grade 2 math in Alberta introduces students to a wide range of foundational concepts that support their mathematical growth through elementary school and beyond. The Alberta Grade 2 curriculum covers number sense up to 1000, addition and subtraction strategies, early fractions, geometry, measurement, patterning, and data collection. StudyPug provides video lessons and practice problems aligned to every one of these topics.
Numbers and Place Value
Alberta Grade 2 students learn to represent quantities using words and natural numbers, identify digits in the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones places, and decompose numbers into groups. They count within 1000 forward and backward, skip count by 2s, 10s, 20s, 25s, and 50s, and place numbers on a number line. These skills form the core of number sense at this grade level.
Addition and Subtraction
Students in Grade 2 recall addition and subtraction facts with addends to 10 and build strategies for adding and subtracting two-digit numbers within 100. They learn to verify answers using inverse operations, find missing quantities, and solve word problems involving countable quantities and measurable lengths.
Fractions and Equal Sharing
Grade 2 introduces unit fractions by having students partition a whole object or set into equal parts. Students compare unit fractions of the same whole, compare the same unit fraction across different-sized wholes, and model one whole using a given unit fraction. Even and odd numbers are also explored through sharing and grouping activities.
Geometry and Spatial Sense
Alberta Grade 2 students sort two- and three-dimensional shapes by geometric attributes, relate the faces of 3D shapes to 2D shapes, and create pictures using shapes from instructions or memory. They also investigate translations, rotations, and reflections of shapes and recognize these transformations in artwork and cultural designs.
Measurement
Students measure length using both non-standard and standard units. They tile and iterate with centimetres, compare and order lengths, identify referents for a centimetre, and estimate lengths by visualizing repeated units. They also explore calendar time, describing durations using comparative language and non-standard units.
Patterns and Data
Grade 2 patterning covers repeating patterns with a core of up to four elements and growing patterns expressed through sounds, objects, pictures, or actions. Students also investigate patterns in a hundreds chart. For data, students generate questions, collect first-hand data, record it in tables, and construct and interpret pictographs, dot plots, and bar graphs.
