Grade 1 Math Topics in Alberta
Alberta's Grade 1 math curriculum covers eight key areas that lay the groundwork for future math success. StudyPug has video lessons and practice problems for every one of these topics, so your child always has support when they need it.
Numbers and Counting
Grade 1 students learn to represent quantities using words, numerals, objects, and pictures. They count forward to 100 starting at any number, count backward from 20 to 0, and skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s. These skills build the number sense Alberta students need for all future math.
Addition and Subtraction
Students model addition and subtraction within 20 and connect these operations to real-life situations. They investigate strategies, check answers using inverse operations, and visualize numbers between 10 and 20 as tens and ones. StudyPug breaks each strategy into clear, step-by-step video lessons.
Fractions — Introduction to Halves
Grade 1 introduces the concept of one-half. Students partition sets of objects and shapes into two equal groups or pieces and describe each part as one-half. This is the foundation for understanding fractions in later grades.
Shapes and Geometry
Students identify familiar two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes in different sizes and orientations. They sort shapes by attributes, compose and decompose composite shapes, and explore symmetry by folding and matching. StudyPug's visual lessons make geometry easy to understand.
Measurement
Grade 1 measurement covers length, area, and capacity. Students compare and order objects, describe distance in familiar contexts, and use a third object to compare two objects indirectly. These hands-on concepts are explained clearly in every StudyPug lesson.
Patterns and Cycles
Students identify pattern cores of up to four elements, find missing elements in repeating patterns, and create different representations of the same pattern. Lessons also connect cycles to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit practices, reflecting Alberta's inclusive curriculum.
Time and Cycles
Grade 1 students describe daily and seasonal cycles, observe changes that signal a new cycle, and read a calendar to identify repeating time patterns. These lessons connect math to the world around your child.
Data and Graphing
Students gather data by sharing answers to questions, build concrete graphs, and create pictographs. These early data skills support Alberta students as they move into more complex data topics in later grades.
