AB Grade 10 English Topics

  • Literary text exploration and interpretation: Students pose questions, suspend judgment, and form tentative interpretations of literary texts while recognizing that initial readings may shift with deeper engagement.
  • Creative and expressive writing: Students experiment with language, image, and structure using stream-of-consciousness writing, free verse poetry, and other creative strategies to achieve specific effects for particular audiences.
  • Personal response and perspective: Students describe personal responses to literature, appraise how responses support or limit understanding, and broaden interpretations by considering other readers' ideas.
  • Literary preferences and genre: Students reflect on text preferences, explore influences behind those preferences, and expand their range across novels, poetry, drama, short stories, and works in translation.
  • Comprehension strategies: Students apply close reading, annotating, questioning, and predicting to understand contextual elements, subtext, and the controlling ideas of literary texts.
  • Literary elements and devices: Students analyze character, setting, conflict, theme, tone, figurative language, irony, satire, motif, symbol, and musical devices such as alliteration and assonance in poetry and prose.
  • Inquiry and research: Students plan literary inquiries, gather information from scholarly sources, organize findings, use proper MLA or APA citation, and evaluate sources for credibility and bias.
  • Writing and representing: Students select appropriate literary forms, develop a controlling idea, incorporate evidence, and meet production and publication requirements for print and oral or multimedia presentations.
  • Writing conventions: Students apply capitalization, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, and spelling conventions, and review texts to correct common sentence faults such as comma splices and run-on sentences.
  • Language, communication, and collaboration: Students monitor verbal and nonverbal communication, appreciate diversity of thought, negotiate group roles, and analyze how language and images reflect cultural values in Canadian and international literature.
