You will discover what interests and abilities are and how they make you special and unique.
What Are Your Interests and Abilities?
You have things you love to do and things you are really good at! These are called your interests and abilities. They are part of what makes you special.
Learning about your interests and abilities helps you learn about Personal Uniqueness what makes you different from everyone else!
Key Terms and Definitions
Interest: An interest is something you enjoy doing a lot. It makes you feel happy. Drawing, swimming, reading, and dancing can all be interests!
Drawing: Drawing means making pictures with crayons or pencils. If you love to draw every day, drawing is one of your interests!
Swimming: Swimming means moving your body through water. Some kids love to swim that makes it their interest!
Reading: Reading means looking at words and pictures in a book. If you love books, reading is one of your interests!
Dancing: Dancing means moving your body to music. If you love to dance, that is your interest!
Ability: An ability is something you are good at doing. Running fast, building with blocks, helping others, and counting numbers are all abilities!
Running fast: Running fast means moving your legs quickly. If you win races at recess, running fast is one of your abilities!
Building with blocks: Building with blocks means stacking pieces to make something tall. If you are great at this, it is one of your abilities!
Helping others: Helping others means being kind and doing things for people who need it. Being a good helper is a special ability!
Counting numbers: Counting numbers means saying numbers in order to find how many there are. If you are good at counting, that is your ability!
Personal characteristic: A personal characteristic is something that tells others about who you are. Your interests and abilities are personal characteristics!
Your Interests Are Special
An interest is something you enjoy and choose to do. You might love drawing, singing, or playing in the snow! Your interests come from inside you.
Two friends can have very different interests. One friend might love hockey and another might love painting. That is perfectly wonderful! You can also have many interests at the same time.
Your Abilities Are Special Too
An ability is a skill you are good at. You might be good at tying your shoes, telling funny stories, or making new friends!
Your abilities can grow when you practise. The more you try, the better you get! You should feel proud of every ability you have.
How to Find Your Interests and Abilities
Try many different activities! Notice what makes you feel happy and excited. Notice what you do really well.
You can share your interests and abilities with others. This helps people learn about who you are. It also helps you connect with Group Participation and Expressing Ideas with the people around you.
Building on What You Know
You already know about your Physical Characteristics and Growth like how tall you are or the color of your hair. Now you are learning about interests and abilities, which are inside characteristics!
Your Family Roles and Responsibilities can also show your interests and abilities. Maybe you love helping your family cook dinner!
