Master Basic Book Skills and Reading Direction

You will learn how books work and the right way to hold and read them. You will discover book parts and reading direction.

Introduction

You will learn how books work and the right way to read them! Books have special parts and rules that help you understand stories better. When you know these basic book conventions and print concepts, reading becomes much easier and more fun.

You need to hold your book right-side-up so pictures look normal. When books are upside down, pictures look silly and backwards! Always check that your book looks right before you start reading.

You should start reading at the front cover of your book. The front cover shows you the title and tells you what the story is about. This is just like starting a race at the starting line!

You read words from left to right across each page. Start on the left side and move your finger to the right as you read each word. This helps you read words in the right order.

You also read from top to bottom on each page. After you finish one line, you move down to the next line below it. This is how you follow the story from beginning to end.

Your book has a front cover that shows the title and pictures. The title tells you the name of your book. Inside your book are pages that you turn to read the whole story.

Each page has text and pictures that work together. The text is made of words that tell you the story. The pictures help you see what the words are talking about.

Front Cover: The first page of your book that shows the title and main picture

Title: The name of your book written in big letters on the front cover

Pages: The sheets of paper inside your book that you turn to read the story

Text: All the words you see in your book that tell you the story

Pictures: The drawings or photos in your book that show what happens in the story

Left to Right: The direction you read words, starting on the left side and moving to the right side

Top to Bottom: The direction you read lines, starting at the top of the page and moving down

Right-Side-Up: The correct way to hold your book so pictures and words look normal

You will build on these basic book concepts by learning about Concepts of print written English features and Left to Right Reading Direction. These topics help you understand more about how printed words work.

You will also practice Follow Print Direction When Reading and Top to Bottom Reading Flow to become a better reader. Learning about Identifying Book Parts will help you find different sections of books.

After you master these basics, you will learn more advanced skills like Print awareness letters and print symbols and Concepts of print directionality and text features. These skills prepare you for reading longer books and stories.

You can practice holding different books right-side-up and finding the front cover. Try pointing to the title on your favorite books and turning pages from front to back.

Practice reading simple words from left to right using your finger to follow along. Look for both text and pictures on each page to understand the complete story.

You don't need to know anything special before learning these book basics! This is where your reading journey begins. You will start with simple concepts and build your skills step by step.
