Introduction

You will learn how to read books the right way! Understanding print direction and text features helps you become a better reader. You will discover how to move your eyes across pages and find important parts of books.

Reading Direction

You always read from left to right across each line. When you finish one line, you move down to the next line. You start reading at the top left of each page.

Books are read from front to back. You begin at the first page and read toward the last page. This helps you follow stories in the right order.

Important Book Parts

The title appears on the front cover. It tells you what the book is about. The title page is the first page inside the book.

Page numbers appear at the bottom of pages. They help you keep track of where you are in the book. A table of contents shows you what topics are in the book and their page numbers.

Text Features That Help You Read

Pictures help tell stories and give you more information. Spaces separate words so you can see where each word starts and stops.

Punctuation marks help you understand sentences. A period shows when a sentence ends. A question mark shows when someone is asking something.

Key Terms & Definitions

Left to Right: The direction you read words across a page, starting on the left side and moving to the right side.

Title: The name of a book that tells you what the book is about, found on the front cover.

Title Page: The first page inside a book that shows the title and author's name.

Page Numbers: Numbers at the bottom of pages that help you know which page you are reading.

Table of Contents: A list at the beginning of a book that shows topics and their page numbers.

Index: A list at the back of a book that shows important words and their page numbers.

Pictures: Images in books that help tell stories and give you more information.

Spaces: Empty areas between words that help you see where each word starts and stops.

Period: A punctuation mark (.) that shows when a sentence has ended.

Question Mark: A punctuation mark (?) used at the end of sentences that ask something.

Front Cover: The first page you see when looking at a book, where the title appears.
