Arizona Kindergarten Math: What Students Learn
Kindergarten is where the math journey begins. Arizona Kindergarten students following the Arizona Mathematics Standards develop essential skills across four main areas: counting and cardinality, operations and algebraic thinking, measurement and data, and geometry. StudyPug covers every one of these areas with clear video lessons and guided practice problems.
Counting and Number Sense
Kindergartners start by learning to count to 100 by ones and by tens, then progress to counting forward from any given number. They write numerals from 0 to 20 and connect counting to cardinality — understanding that the last number counted tells you how many objects are in a group. Students also compare groups to determine which has more, less, or an equal number of objects, and compare written numerals between 1 and 10.
Addition and Subtraction Foundations
Arizona Kindergarten students are introduced to addition and subtraction using objects, fingers, drawings, and equations. They solve word problems, add and subtract within 10, and learn to decompose numbers into pairs. Students also practice finding the number that completes 10 when added to any number from 1 to 9, and build fluency adding and subtracting within 5. Composing and decomposing numbers from 11 to 19 using tens and ones lays the groundwork for place value in later grades.
- Add and subtract within 10 using objects and drawings
- Decompose numbers into pairs in more than one way
- Find the missing number that makes 10
- Fluently add and subtract within 5
- Understand numbers 11-19 as ten ones and extra ones
Measurement and Data
Students describe measurable attributes of objects such as length and weight, and directly compare two objects to identify which has more or less of a given attribute. They also classify objects into categories and count how many are in each group, then sort categories by count — an early introduction to data organization.
Geometry and Shapes
Kindergarten geometry teaches students to name and describe shapes in their environment, identify whether shapes are two-dimensional or three-dimensional, and analyze how shapes are similar or different. Students also practice building and drawing shapes, and composing simple shapes to form larger ones — developing spatial reasoning that supports geometry in future grades.
How StudyPug Supports Arizona Kindergarten Math
StudyPug's video lessons break each Arizona Mathematics Standards topic into short, easy-to-follow segments. Kids can watch a lesson, practice problems, and revisit any concept they find tricky — all at their own pace. Parents can monitor progress and make sure their child is building the right skills for kindergarten success.
