Saskatchewan Grade 2 Math Curriculum Overview

Grade 2 math in Saskatchewan introduces students to a wide range of foundational concepts that prepare them for more advanced mathematics in later grades. From counting and comparing whole numbers to 100, to exploring shapes and reading graphs, Grade 2 is a critical year for building number sense and mathematical thinking.

Whole Numbers and Number Sense

Saskatchewan Grade 2 students learn to represent, describe, and compare whole numbers to 100. They practice skip counting, identify odd and even numbers, and develop skills in estimating and ordering numbers. These early number skills form the base for all future math learning.

Addition and Subtraction to 100

Grade 2 math covers addition and subtraction with 1 and 2-digit numbers up to 100. Students learn multiple strategies for solving problems, practice estimating answers, and explore how addition and subtraction relate to each other. Problem-solving with real-world examples helps connect math to everyday life.

Patterns and Algebra Readiness

Students in Grade 2 explore both repeating patterns with three to five elements and increasing patterns. They learn to describe, extend, compare, and create patterns using a variety of representations. Understanding equality and inequality for numbers 0 to 100 lays the groundwork for algebraic thinking in later grades.

Measurement

Grade 2 introduces non-standard units for measuring length and mass. Students choose appropriate units, estimate measurements, and compare objects. These hands-on skills develop measurement reasoning before students move to standard units in higher grades.

Geometry: Shapes and Objects

Saskatchewan Grade 2 students describe, compare, and construct 3-D objects including cubes, spheres, cones, cylinders, and pyramids. They also work with 2-D shapes such as triangles, squares, rectangles, and circles. A key focus is understanding the relationship between 2-D shapes and 3-D objects.

Data and Graphs

Students learn to create and interpret concrete graphs and pictographs. They use graphs to solve problems and communicate data findings. These skills connect math to real-world information and support critical thinking.
