Separating Parts with Objects Up to 5

This kindergarten lesson shows how to separate a group of up to 5 objects into two smaller parts using counters and pictures, the hands-on step before writing subtraction number sentences.

Introduction

Before children write subtraction with numbers, they need to see and touch it. Separating parts with objects up to 5 is a hands-on skill where a small group of objects, up to five in all, is split into two smaller groups. This is the physical action behind every subtraction sentence a child will later write.

What Does Separating Parts Mean?

When we separate a group, we start with one whole set of objects and pull some of them away, leaving a smaller set behind. If there are 5 counters on the table and we move 2 of them to the side, only 3 are left where they started. That leftover amount is the "part" we are looking for.

This is the reverse of combining, where two small parts are pushed together to make one bigger group. If your child has already practiced combining together with objects up to 5, separating will feel familiar because it uses the exact same objects, just moving in the opposite direction.

Separating Objects Step by Step

Follow these steps every time a group needs to be separated:

  1. Count out the whole group of objects (never more than 5).
  2. Decide how many objects will be taken away or moved aside.
  3. Physically slide, cross out, or cover that many objects.
  4. Count what remains in the original spot — that is the part left over.

Worked Example: Separating 5 Objects

Suppose there are 5 apples in a basket, and 2 apples are taken out to give to a friend. Line up all 5 apples, then physically remove 2 of them. Count what remains in the basket: 1, 2, 3. Three apples are left. In words, we say "5 take away 2 leaves 3," and in numbers this becomes the subtraction sentence \(5 - 2 = 3\).

Try another set: start with 4 objects and separate off 1. Moving 1 object away leaves 3 objects behind, so \(4 - 1 = 3\). Notice that the "whole" (4 or 5) is always the biggest number, and the two "parts" it separates into are always smaller than the whole and add back up to it.

Connecting Separating to Subtraction

Every time an object is physically separated from a group, a subtraction fact is being acted out. The number of objects you started with is the first number, the number you moved away is the number being subtracted, and the number left over is the answer. This hands-on separating is what makes later work, like adding with digits up to 5, and its opposite skill of separating, meaningful rather than just memorized.

Once separating with real objects feels comfortable, the same story can be told with a picture instead of physical counters. Retelling these separating stories out loud also builds toward addition word problems up to 5, since both skills depend on picturing a whole group breaking into parts.

Practice Tip

Use small everyday items, like buttons, crackers, or toy blocks, and keep the total at 5 or fewer. Ask "If I take some away, how many are left?" and let your child move the objects with their own hands before saying the answer out loud. Checking the leftover count by touching each object one at a time helps confirm the separated part is correct.
