What Is a 2D Shape?

How to Select a 2D Shape
Naming a shape is only half the skill. Selecting a shape means being shown several shapes at once and picking out the one that matches a name you hear, such as "point to the triangle." This is often the harder part because the shapes are mixed together and can be turned, made bigger or smaller, or colored differently.
A simple strategy is to ask three questions about the shape being searched for:
Is it round, or does it have straight sides?
How many sides does it have?
How many corners does it have?
For example, if the goal is to select the rectangle, first rule out any round shapes. Then look for a shape with exactly 4 straight sides and 4 corners, where the sides are not all equal. This step-by-step check works no matter how the shapes are arranged.

Shapes Can Change Size, Color, and Direction
One tricky part of this skill is realizing that a shape keeps its name even when it looks different. A small red triangle and a large blue triangle pointing sideways are both still triangles, because they both have exactly 3 sides and 3 corners. Children sometimes think a shape's color or size changes what it is called, so practicing with shapes of many colors and sizes helps build this understanding.

Naming and selecting 2D shapes becomes easier when children connect shapes to everyday objects.
