Predicting the Next Number Up to 5

This kindergarten lesson teaches how to predict the next number up to 5 by recognizing counting order and patterns. Students learn to use number lines, counting sequences, and simple missing-number activities to figure out what number comes next.

Introduction

Predicting the next number is one of the first counting skills a child builds after learning to count objects and match numbers. Once a child can count from 1 to 5 in the correct order, the next step is figuring out which number comes right after another number, even without counting from the very beginning every time.

What Does It Mean to Predict the Next Number?

When we predict the next number, we look at a number or a short list of numbers and decide which number should come after it, based on the normal counting order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. For example, if a child sees the number 3, they should be able to say that 4 comes next, because 4 always follows 3 when counting up.

This skill builds directly on earlier counting work, like counting objects using numbers up to 3. Once counting feels automatic, predicting the next number becomes a natural next question: "I know where I am, so where do I go next?"

Counting Forward: The Key Idea

The whole skill rests on one simple idea: each number is one more than the number right before it. We can write this as \( n + 1 \), where \( n \) is the number we already know. So if \( n = 2 \), the next number is \( 2 + 1 = 3 \). This same idea shows up again later in adding one up to 5, so getting comfortable with "one more" now makes that lesson much easier.

To predict the next number confidently, a child should be able to say the counting sequence from 1 to 5 without skipping any number:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Using a Number Line to Predict

A number line is a helpful picture for this skill because it lays the numbers 1 through 5 out in order, from left to right. To predict the next number, a child points to the number they know and then moves one step to the right.

1 2 3 4 5 next
Starting at 3 and moving one step forward on the number line shows that 4 comes next.

Filling in a Missing Number

Many practice activities show a short sequence with one number missing and ask a child to fill in what comes next. Here are a few examples of how to work through them:

Example 1: 1, 2, 3, __. Count aloud: "1, 2, 3." The next number after 3 is 4, so the missing number is 4.

Example 2: 2, 3, __, 5. Here the missing number sits between 3 and 5. Counting forward from 3 gives 4, so the missing number is 4.

Example 3: __, 2, 3, 4. Since the sequence continues up to 4, we look at what comes before 2, which is 1.

Working out which number is missing, no matter where it sits in the row, is exactly the skill tested on typical what comes next worksheets and next number in sequence practice sheets.

Tips for Practicing at Home

  • Say the numbers 1 to 5 out loud together every day until the order feels automatic.
  • Point to objects, like fingers or blocks, while counting so the number order connects to real amounts, similar to the practice in tracing and writing a number up to 3.
  • Cover up one number in a written sequence and ask, "What number is hiding?"
  • Start the count from different numbers, not always from 1, so the child learns to predict from any starting point.

With steady practice, predicting the next number up to 5 becomes second nature, and it lays the groundwork for counting further, adding numbers, and recognizing patterns in later grades.
