Applications of integer operations
Integer takes its definition from the Latin word that means whole. An integer is simply a whole number that is either a positive integer or a negative integer. Positive integers are all the whole numbers that are more than 0, while negative integers are all whole numbers that are less than 0.
In the first session we will be looking at how to multiply integers, both positive and negative by looking at modeling with integer chips. We will learn how to translate these integer chip diagrams into mathematical equations and how to solve them as well. The rules in multiplying integers are very simple, if you multiply two positive integers, you will get a positive product, if you would multiply two negative integers you would still get positive products, but if you multiply a positive and a negative integer together, you would be getting a negative integer.
In session 2, and 3 we will discuss how to divide integers, again like the sign rules in multiplication, integers with like signs would give you a positive quotient, while integers with differing signs would give out a negative quotient. We will also learn modeling with number line to solve for a number’s quotient.
Last but not the least in session 4 we will use the skills we learn in the previous segments to solve for problems involving integer operations. Like how we solve problems that involve several operations, the order of operations will dictate how to solve a given equation.
