What Are Physical Characteristics?

Your body has special features you can see. These are called physical characteristics. Hair color, eye color, and height are all physical characteristics. You can learn about Personal Uniqueness to see how your features make you special.

Every person has physical characteristics. They make each person look different from others. No two people look exactly the same!

Your Body Features

Your hair can be long or short. It can be straight or curly. Hair can be black, brown, blonde, or red. Your eyes help you see things around you. Eyes can be brown, blue, green, or other colors.

Your skin covers your whole body. Skin can be light, medium, or dark. Your height tells us if you are tall or short. These features are all physical characteristics!

Your Body Parts and Senses

Your body parts each have a special job. Your eyes help you see. Your ears help you hear sounds. Your nose helps you smell things. Your tongue helps you taste food. Your skin helps you feel if something is hot or cold.

These body parts are physical characteristics too. You were born with all of them!

How Your Body Grows

Your body grows and changes as you get older. This is called physical growth. You get taller and bigger every year. Your feet grow bigger too that is why you need new shoes!

What Stays the Same and What Changes

Some things about your body stay the same as you grow. The color of your eyes usually stays the same. You always have ten fingers and ten toes. Other things change like your height, your weight, and your shoe size.

Height: Height tells us how tall or short you are. You can measure your height in centimetres.

Hair Color: Hair color is the color of the hair on your head. Hair can be black, brown, blonde, red, or other colors.

Eye Color: Eye color is the color of your eyes. Eyes can be brown, blue, green, or other colors. Your eye color usually stays the same as you grow.

Skin: Skin covers your whole body. Skin can be light, medium, or dark in color. Your skin also helps you feel hot and cold.

Hair Texture: Hair texture tells us if your hair is straight, curly, or wavy. It is something you can see and touch.

Physical Growth: Physical growth is when your body gets bigger and taller as you get older. Growing is something all healthy children do.

Growing: Growing means your body is getting bigger over time. You grow taller, your feet get bigger, and your teeth change as you grow.

Baby Teeth: Baby teeth are the first teeth you have. Around age five or six, your baby teeth start to fall out and new teeth grow in.

Unique: Unique means one of a kind. Your mix of physical characteristics makes you unique and special!

You can draw a picture of yourself and color in your hair, eyes, and skin. This is called a self-portrait. Look in a mirror and name your physical characteristics out loud.
