You will learn how a personal timeline shows your important life events in order, from when you were born to today.
What Is a Personal Timeline?
A personal timeline is a special tool that shows your life events in order. It starts with when you were born and goes all the way to today. You can use it to see how you have grown and changed!
On a timeline, the left side shows the oldest events. The right side shows the most recent events. You read a timeline from left to right, just like reading a book. Learning about your timeline connects to Personal Milestones and the big steps you have taken in your life.
Your First and Most Important Life Events
The very first event on your personal timeline is the day you were born. Being born always comes first! After that, you grew and learned many new things.
Some important life events you might put on your timeline are your first steps, your first words, and your first day of school. Moving to a new home or getting a new baby brother or sister are also big events. These are called milestones special steps that show how much you have grown. You can also explore Family Changes to see how your family's story connects to your own timeline.
Key Terms and Definitions
Timeline: A timeline shows your life events in order, from the past to today. It helps you see what happened first, next, and last in your life.
Born: "Born" means the moment you came into the world. It is always the very first event on your personal timeline.
Birthday: Your birthday is the special day each year when you celebrate growing older. It marks the day you were born.
Now: "Now" means the present moment what is happening today. It is often the last point shown on your personal timeline.
First: "First" is a time order word that tells you what happened at the very beginning.
Next: "Next" is a time order word that tells you what came after the first event.
Last: "Last" is a time order word that tells you the final event shown on the timeline.
Before: "Before" means something happened earlier than something else. For example, you were born before you started school.
Past: The past means things that already happened before today, like when you were a baby.
Present: The present means what is happening right now, at this very moment.
Future: The future means things that have not happened yet, like events that will come later in your life.
Milestone: A milestone is an important step or achievement in your life, like taking your first steps or starting school.
Sequence: Sequence means the order in which events happened, one after another, from first to last.
How to Read and Make Your Timeline
You put events on your timeline in the order they really happened. Being born goes first on the left. Your most recent event, like starting school, goes near the right side.
You can use drawings and photos to show your events. Ask a parent or grandparent to help you remember events from when you were very little. They were there and can share your early life story! This connects to Family Stories, where you learn how family members share memories with you.
Fun Timeline Activities
You can draw pictures of your important life events and put them in order. Try using time order words like "first," "next," and "last" to tell your story out loud.
