Kolbe James – The Modification of Educational Development
The educational system has become more dependent on the Internet for operating as a resource for students and teachers. This provides both a positive and negative means of education. First off, the tool of “Googling” provides quick and easy access to find solutions to a problem. One can find the answer in a few seconds, not to mention find a compilation of sources on a single issue. Finding the answer, however, in a few seconds does not necessarily equal sound comprehension on the student’s part. The role of education is to initiate participation from students and guide them in subject matter. It forms creative thinking, resulting to produce efficient individuals to solve issues not only academically, but also collectively. Education forms individuals, and thus it is imperative that the world of academia remains an interactive experience to ensure that students gain the most out of their education and integrate it into the real world.
Firstly, to evaluate the positive evaluation of Internet based learning; online school offers a great opportunity for those with busy work schedules. The idea of fitting an education around your schedule is innovative, allowing individuals who already have careers or families to continue to a higher education. Though this may prove convenient, it obviously lacks the traditional classroom setting. Many universities however, provide courses that attain the interactive setting between student and teacher. Some schools require an outreach with a mentor from the institution to do a weekly evaluation to check on the student’s progress and weak points. Overall, this idea seems like a win-win, not only for the student, but for the institution as well. This has become the balance and intermediary for education to be available for those who cannot attend university full time. Thus, with education being inventively accessible, it will be more manageable for people to get an education.
Contrary, with the decline of interactive, person-to-person engagement in the classroom, this proves the downfall for educational vocations. Online education will need less abled staff. The work of a college student has shifted to computer-based work. Professors and teachers require most of the course work to be submitted online, i.e. short reflections, essays, power point, etc. Classes rarely meet thrice a week. Instruction consists of power point presentation, a few questions, and you are done. The student is being fed all of the information and answers he/she needs in order to pass the course. It is rare to see students searching in the library for related material on their course work. The large tomes sitting on the shelf have become more of an antiquity and nostalgia than a resource. Not to mention instructional methods have resulted the same. Now one goes to class to hear a mundane, monotone voice regurgitate the words on the projector. The involvement has been taken out of learning development. This affects also the social stamina of an individual. High School has followed in the same path of online education. The idea of online learning is unlimited, but it is creating an obstruction of the classical educational system, and in the long run will be the devastation of our intergraded cultural structure.
